For those who buy and sell coins on a regular basis, they know that coins may not always have the highest value out of antiques, because coins are usually produced in mass quantities. Despite this fact, there are still many rare coins out there that are worth a lot of money. Bring in your old coins for an appraisal if you think they might be worth something. You could be pleasantly surprised.

Coins are made of all different types of metals. Here are some facts about the value and material of different coins:
  • If you buy and sell coins, you already know that pennies made after 1983 are made out of zinc, not copper.
  • Gold and silver have also been popular metals to make coins in the past.
  • Silver was removed from coins in 1965, so coins that were made before this time are generally worth more money. The exception to this was the Kennedy half-dollar, which retained 40 percent silver content through 1970.
  • Paper money with a serial number of one has grown increasingly popular. Being the “first of their kind” these notes are worth huge amounts of money.

One antique coin holds the record of being the U.S. coin that sold for the highest price. The McNeal Antiques1933 double eagle coin sold for $7.59 million dollars in 2002. The original 1933 double eagle coins were worth $20. In FDR’s attempt to help the American economy, he ordered that all gold coins were no longer considered legal tender. Most of the coins were melted down. Somehow some of the coins got into private hands. The double eagle coin sold at auction is the only one that the government has not seized and sent to Fort Knox to protect. An interesting story for any of those who buy and sell coins, the story of the 1933 double eagle coin is definitely a rare one.

Another valuable coin is the Morgan dollar. People who buy and sell coins know that these are some of the highest-priced coins on the market today. They were minted from 1878 until 1904, and then they were brought back again in 1921. Different proofs of these coins are worth more money, because they are rarer.

Coins have also had all different kinds of values in the past. Before FDR took gold coins out of circulation in 1933, gold coins held values of:
  • $1
  • $2.50 (also called a quarter eagle)
  • $3
  • $5 (a half eagle)
  • $10 (an eagle)
  • $20 (the double eagle we mentioned earlier)
